Background of the Nigerian Economy

Discover Nigeria's Economic Landscape and Diversification Efforts

Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa, with a GDP greater than USD 500 billion. This growth has been driven primarily by the non-oil sectors, such as financial services, telecommunications, and entertainment. Foreign direct investment inflows have been strong, averaging USD 2 billion per quarter since 2013, with over 70% in non-oil sectors. Despite its challenges, Nigeria's economy is diversified, with the oil sector contributing only about 14% to GDP.

The current administration has focused on three main sectors: telecommunications, financial services, and cement. The success in these sectors is attributed to the right enabling environment, policy consistency, and fostering competition among industry operators.
The Nigerian Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) launched in 2012 focuses on agro-allied, solid minerals, and oil and gas-related industries. Efforts are also being made to improve the ease of doing business and build robust infrastructure to promote economic growth.
Diversification is a priority for Nigeria. The administration is committed to creating a conducive environment for trade and investment, focusing on non-oil sectors to ensure sustainable economic growth.
